Extreme sports strengthen the one’s inner power

A diving mask is an essential device that allows underwater divers and swimmers, including freedivers, scuba divers, and snorkelers, to see clearly beneath the water’s surface. Surface divers often use a full face mask or a protective helmet for enhanced visibility and protection.

How a Diving Mask Works

When the human eye is in direct contact with water, light is refracted at a different angle, preventing the eye from focusing light directly onto the retina. A diving mask creates an air space in front of the eyes, allowing them to focus naturally.

Some masks can accommodate corrective lenses, and contact lenses can also be worn inside the mask for those with vision impairments.

Purpose of a Diving Mask

  1. Acts as a Lens: The diving mask functions like a lens, allowing the eye to focus correctly underwater. Without it, water’s refractive index, similar to that of the cornea, disrupts normal vision, resulting in a blurred image.
  2. Refraction of Light: When light enters the mask, objects appear 34% larger and 25% closer than they actually are underwater.
  3. Color Filtering: As a diver goes deeper, water filters out red hues from sunlight, leaving only blue light. At greater depths, artificial light is necessary to see clearly.
  4. Air Space: The mask’s window creates an air space between the eyes and the surrounding water, allowing clear vision. Light refraction at the air-water interface can cause objects to appear distorted, similar to how fish look in an aquarium.
